What’s included in the “Cleared Customs” price?
Our cleared customs price includes everything you need to get the vehicle from Japan to Devon, Alberta—ready for inspection and pickup. That includes:
-
The cost of the vehicle
-
Inland transportation in Japan
-
Export and shipping fees
-
Ocean freight insurance
-
Import duties & GST
-
Canadian customs clearance
-
Our brokerage fee
Note: Larger SUVs and vans cost more to ship due to volume and weight. Duty and GST are based on the declared value of the vehicle.
How do I know I’m getting the best deal?
At Japan Canada Motors, we charge a flat, transparent fee. Because we work directly with trusted partners and auction houses in Japan, if you find a comparable vehicle being advertised by another importer, we're open to discussing fee adjustments to match value where applicable.
Where can you ship JDM vehicles?
We can ship to any province or territory in Canada that allows 15-year-old JDM imports, including:
-
Alberta: Devon, Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Grande Prairie
-
British Columbia: Kelowna, Kamloops, Terrace, Victoria
-
Prairies & Central: Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa
-
East Coast & North: Halifax, St. John’s, Yellowknife, Whitehorse
We also ship to the United States for vehicles that meet the 25-year-old requirement.
Are the vehicles checked for radiation?
Yes. All JDM vehicles are screened prior to shipping to ensure they comply with international radiation safety standards.
What’s the difference between a custom order and buying from Japan stock?
-
Custom Order: You choose a specific vehicle, and we bid or negotiate on your behalf. We act as your personal buyer in Japan.
-
Japan Stock: These are hand-picked units from our partners in Japan that are ready to ship to Canada. Pricing is set and includes all customs-cleared costs up to Devon.
Why is the mileage so low?
Due to Japan’s dense cities and excellent public transportation, cars are driven less frequently. Fuel and toll costs are also much higher than in Canada, contributing to lower odometer readings.
Note: Some enthusiast vehicles may have odometer changes (e.g., cluster swaps or upgrades). We review and translate auction sheets carefully to disclose any such details.
Why are there so many used cars in Japan?
Japanese drivers tend to prefer new vehicles due to cultural and government incentives. On top of that, the Shaken inspection system is extremely strict, requiring cars to be in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. Rather than pay for repairs, many owners choose to auction their vehicles—which fuels Japan’s massive export market.
Is it risky to import a JDM vehicle?
Not with us. Japan Canada Motors has built long-standing relationships with reliable sources in Japan and takes every precaution to ensure the vehicle you choose is the one you receive. We review auction sheets, conduct secondary inspections when needed, and provide all documentation before you make your final decision.
What’s included in the paperwork?
Every vehicle from Japan Canada Motors includes:
-
Bill of Sale
-
Alberta Vehicle Inspection Certificate
-
Export Certificate
-
Compliance installations
-
3-month powertrain warranty
How can I insure my JDM vehicle?
Insurance availability varies depending on your province, vehicle, and personal driving record. We recommend speaking with your insurance broker before purchase to confirm available coverage. We’re happy to help you find local providers familiar with imported vehicles.
Where can I get parts?
Many JDM vehicles share parts with North American models. For those that don’t, we can help you source what you need from:
-
Local suppliers
-
Online auctions (Yahoo Japan, eBay)
-
Specialty part brokers and importers
Need help? Just ask—we can point you in the right direction.
Can I convert my vehicle to left-hand drive?
Technically yes, but it’s rarely recommended. LHD conversions are expensive and complex. If you're unsure about driving right-hand drive, we suggest connecting with a local JDM car club or visiting us for a test drive first.
